Sappy Sunday Nights

This sign was on a biking/hiking trail I meandered along over winter break.
It epitomizes how I feel about life right now.
I graduate in three months.
What next?

I mean, I am applying to some cool opportunities, and I have an internship for the summer
and I'm not even looking for a "real" job yet....
but I am still a little overwhelmed.

I love where I am right now in my life. I am in an amazing city, at an awesome school,
with a fabulous apartment, roommates I love, great friends and a wonderful church.

It's hard to plan for the future when you love where you are so much.
(But hey, at least I didn't have a horrible college experience right?)

Back when I graduated from high school (and had really long hair and didn't know how to open my eyes) I was so ready to get out of there planning was no problem: I was going to study abroad, and explore a new city, and make new friends, and do things I have never done before.

And I did.

Now, planning is so much further open....it's not just choosing a school.
It's choosing a life.

Not my whole life of course, but at least a year or two.

Some days I am so excited for that.
And some days I listen to this song a million times and become really nostalgic and question all of my decisions and abilities and go a little crazy.

And Sunday nights are the worse.
(The Super Bowl doesn't change that fact for people like me that pay more attention to the horribly sexist commercials than the game....media messages hurt women!)
(Ok that is another blog post. )
Looking back on a week, looking ahead.

But hey, it's been an amazing 22 years thus far.
I have faith it will continue to be amazing.

Holidays: A Poetry/Photo Montage

(A very bad poem using limerick rhyme scheme and a rhyming dictionary.
In each verse I tried to use at least one outrageous rhyming dictionary suggestion.)

This year I came home for Winter Break
And it came almost too late
My semester was stressful
My course load was high
And I nearly met an ill fate

But I made it to my lovely home
and felt that I could never roam
so far again from trees and fields
and Southern food and Southern words
Not even for polyurethane foam

I was excited to celebrate the holidays
with words of Christmas song and praise
with my mom's Spice Tea and cookies
with friends and family and anyone who came
even with Rutherford B. Hayes

We went to my Grandpa's house
Where no one could grouse
because there was fried fish a plenty
and the view was pristine
and no sight of a sucking louse

I read oh so very many books
about God and poetry and crooks
I think I broke my personal record
as I lost myself in the new worlds
and came out hungry for chinooks*

I went to a New Year's Eve party
Where the food and the laughter was hearty
our sweaters were tacky
and our stories were funny
and luckily no one was farty.

There were sad times and glad times
and the occasional eating of limes
Now to face my very last semester
With good cheer and with courage
and hopefully very few crimes

PS I would recommend any of the books in the above photo!

*I am using this word as a reference to a "large Pacific salmon" not a member of the Chinook tribe, because, you know, I don't eat people.

Life Lately

I was in DC, and I survived finals, and it was Christmas time, and I came home to Georgia and we celebrated Christmas and a birthday and New Years. And that is what life has been about lately.

I am trying to decide if I will start writing more in this blog or,
with this bright and shiny new year,
start a bright and shiny new blog.

I have opinions to share, you see, also funny stories and good photos and really,
everyone should be very interested in my life.
You especially.

For example, in a new blog/revamped blog I will be telling stories such as:
the man who tried to kiss me in the metro,
and the time I hiked a canyon in a thunderstorm,
and how I found myself in a dance off in a DC bar.

Am I such a great storyteller?
Well, I did unofficially win Best Story of 2011 at a New Years Eve party I attended.
We all shared some rip roaring tales, and my story of hanging out with a shaman and his puppies in the Amazon jungle was a big crowd pleaser.

So wether I continue here, or lead you to a new location, stick with me. I promise, it will be an entertaining way to procrastinate from that other thing you really got online to do.

Happy 2012 to all!

ps. I revamped this blog a bit. So you can keep following me on here! I know you want to!

PPS.  A New Years Promise (for real, pinky promise) is to write more on here. It will be good practice, and save my poor roommates from my ramblings.

Fresh Attempt at Saving Sanity

This is how my semester started...with a tree having fallen on our library.
Yes, we have a Starbucks in our library.

It's been nearly a month since I wrote, though I had all the best intentions to regale you all with some funny and touching stories from Peru as well as my deep thoughts on being back in the District and struggling to not grow up. But alas....

Instead, I recently had a few weeks in which I had a strange allergic reaction and ended up in the ER, turned 22 years old, forgot about multiple class assignments, crowd-surfed, made new friends, despaired of my life, was excited by my life, and locked myself out of my room last night and am running off a few hours of terrible sleep on a too-small couch.

And I've been missing this place a lot. Lima.

It's been crazy, but I have realized, as I have gone about three weeks without a journal, waiting for my birthday present journal I get every year (it arrived and is cute!), that perhaps writing my stories and thoughts is just as important to my sanity as living off more than brownies. So I think, along with my journal, I will try to return to expressing myself a little bit here. And eat veggies.

Hold your breath for the next installment of my far too exciting life. I know not many people read this (though I can't be sure since multiple friends refuse to make a little profile and follow me) and so I feel silly writing on here and somehow expecting an audience. But oh well, I also feel silly locking myself out of my room and falling on someone's head while crowd-surfing. That's just how it goes.
